Where do we belong?

September 2023

This year, as a whole school,  we are focused on belonging and multilingualism. We celebrated this by spending the first few days of school inquiring into the central idea: People have a responsibility to establish communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

On our first day of school, we hosted an early morning assembly at the Mondrian campus with Groups 5-8, and another later in the day at the Rembrandt campus for Groups 3 and 4.

At Mondrian, students engaged with those around them to discuss the concept of belonging. Led by Ms. Alyssa, students shared definitions and vocabulary from their home languages. Sofia shared that in Russian you would say: “Mesto, gde ty dolzhen byt”, which, in English, translates to: “The place where you should be”.

At Rembrandt, Ms. Helena talked to our younger learners about the idea of belonging and read the book ‘This Is a School’ by John Schu. Helena closed by sharing this video with the students that was made at the end of last year.
